Carlong Publishers hosted the 17th staging of its Basic Schools Donation ceremonies, gifting 2,500 textbooks and general readers to 50 needy basic schools across Jamaica to promote literacy and the reading habit at the early childhood level.

In support of the Make Every Child a Reader, Early Childhood Literacy Campaign, Carlong enlisted the help of the Early Childhood Commission (ECC) to identify the schools in need. An assortment of textbooks and general readers for children ages 3 to 6 years in kindergarten and Grade 1 were gifted to each school, including two of Carlong’s newest publications, Let’s Learn to Write-Script and Bintah and the Hungry Giants.

The first donation ceremony was held inside the Joyce Robinson Reading Room at the Kingston & St. Andrew Parish Library on May 29, 2018; and the second ceremony on May 31, 2018 at the Grandiosa Hotel in Montego Bay, St. James. Both ceremonies were supported by officials from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information (MOEYI), members of the ECC and other members of the education sector, namely Brittany Singh-Williams from the MOEYI and Latoya West-Blackwood, President of the Book Industry Association of Jamaica (BIAJ); Tanisha Miller and Norda Seymour-Hall from the ECC; and Clayton Hall representing the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA). (Photo l-r: Brittany Singh-Williams, Norda Seymour-Hall and CEO of Carlong Publishers Lorna Allen read from Meet Bintah with children from Kingston-based basic schools.)

We firmly believe that a good early childhood education is the best foundation for a lifetime of learning.
