Corporate & Industry Leadership
Since inception, we have been conscious of our role as a cultural agency with a mission to record and disseminate Jamaican and Caribbean culture and traditions. We are extremely conscious of our role in aiding literacy development and making every Caribbean child a successful reader. We work with other stakeholders, in keeping with the policies and programmes of the Jamaica Ministry of Education, Youth and Information (MOEYI) and other Ministries of Education in the region, to develop curriculum-relevant and literacy-enhancing books to support the quality of teaching and learning.
A reading people is an informed, confident, creative and productive people, and that is the kind of people we want to nurture in Caribbean societies. As partners in the education process, we support that vision through active participation in various reading and literacy initiatives and through the annual donation of thousands of books to schools, libraries, reading resource centres, communities and other organizations.
As a pioneering indigenous Caribbean publishing company, we have given dynamic leadership to the development of the book industry in the region. Shirley Carby, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Carlong Publishers, is the founding President of the Book Industry Association of Jamaica (BIAJ) established in 1989, which brings together all sectors of the industry and facilitates joint development initiatives, improved standards of service to the public, and a joint lobby on issues affecting the industry.
